Details: Combined, the Big Five (minus Macmillan, which is unknown) published 98,800 new titles in 2019. In 2018, the latest year of data available, 1.6 million books were self-published. Data for small presses could not be found, however some definitions require that small presses publish on average 10 or fewer titles per year, and there are somewhere around 150-200 of them, so the estimate of 1,500 was used above.

What’s Happening on “Bookstagram”
“Bookstagram” is a nickname given to the community of aspiring authors, published authors, agents, and editors active on Instagram. It’s largely similar to Twitter, but there are a few hashtags that are different, and may believe there is a higher chance of interacting with actual readers due to Instagram’s higher popularity. Many people choose one platform as their main interaction platform and simply duplicate their posts on the other. Many also simply use both.
